Family History

Tracing family history is becoming an increasingly popular past time, but where do you start?

Family History

There are a number of resources available in the New Forest, Hampshire and online.

If you or your ancestors are local to the New Forest, access to the Census and local newspapers is available through Hampshire County Libraries at The New Forest Reference Library based in The New Forest Centre, Lyndhurst.

The New Forest Centre has the facility to provide a range of information including census material for 1841-1901 covering south west Hampshire, parish registers and information on some of the forest villages.  Please visit the New Forest Centre - Family History Advice - Finding Your Ancestors website for further information.  Access to the 1911 Census is now also available.

The New Forest HGS Family History Group holds meetings on the first Wednesday of every month. Please contact the Group Organiser.

Cemetery Information

The Council does not maintain the records for churchyards or cemeteries administered by Parish or Town Councils within the area and any requests for information in respect of these should be made direct to the relevant church or Town Council.

Further cemeteries information is available via email from the New Forest District Council Cemetery Office.
